The 2011 RCA Ladrigan Swim Races have been cancelled

After much deliberating, the RCA and the 6th Taxing district have decided to cancel the 2011 Arthur J. Ladrigan Swim Races & Family Fun Day.

This was not an easy decision to make, however, after postponing the event due to the hurricane Irene, we have been hard-pressed to find a suitable alternative date.

One of the dates we considered for the re-scheduled event was September 10th, but this will be the date for the memorial service for much loved Rowayton resident, Joan LaClair. This service will take place at 10:00am at the United Church of Rowayton.

Over the past year the RCA has fielded comments and suggestions regarding the 1 mile swim course, as well as the overall safety of the event. This winter, the RCA & The 6th Taxing District will be spending a great deal energy reorganizing the event in the hopes to bring back a better, safer & more organized Lighthouse Race & Buoy Race next year!

Please go to the RCA website for upcoming news and always remember we would love to hear any feedback you might have for next year's event.

Celebrate the end of the summer season with the annual Arthur J. Ladrigan Swim Races and Family Fun Day at Bayley Beach, Sunday, August 28th. Sign-ups for the one mile & quarter-mile races will be conducted all online this year prior to the event. Following the one-mile & quarter-mile races are the children’s swim races, which are grouped by age and run parallel to the beach. Finally, after the awards ceremony all are invited to join in the traditional beach games, which include a tug-of-war, a pie-eating contest and a treasure hunt.

Last year, we saw another record turnout for the Arthur J. Ladrigan Family Swim Races held at Bayley Beach. Once again, we enjoyed a beautiful day with enough events for the entire family. Attendance was greatly improved and we even saw a veteran winner unseated for the first time in years!

Aside from the prowess of all our swimmers and the enthusiastic support of all of those who volunteer: the suggestion and comments we receive from our community is what drives this event successfully forward each year. From organizational comments to safety concerns, the RCA is listening carefully.

With growing participation we understand the need to have more volunteers present and more safety measures in place. For this reason we will now be initiating a $20 entrance fee for each swimmer/kayak team. Due to the event’s popularity we need to offset some of our costs and plan for a better, more organized event. Furthermore, due to feedback and concerns of past participants we have decided to reroute the Lighthouse Race route in efforts to provide a safer experience for all swimmers and volunteers.

Once again we appreciate the support of all our volunteers, and do hope to get even more of the community involved to help organize onshore events as well as seasoned boaters to help with offshore logistics. Please check back from time to time, as we will be posting more information as the event approaches!

To volunteer, call Mike Barbis at 838-7887 or Ted Hildner at 273-1526.
