About Rowayton Gardeners
The ongoing work of the Rowayton Gardeners keeps our town looking beautiful. New this season are the original stone benches and planters at the Community Center, pulled from the Ice House and positioned among the plantings bordering the dog park and Highland Avenue. Ongoing projects of the Rowayton Gardeners include the Community Center rose bed and flagpole areas, and the Pinkney Park herb garden.
The club is a member of the Federated Garden
Clubs of Connecticut, Inc. and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Its objective
is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs; to share
in the advantages of an association; to aid in the preservation of native plants; and to encourage conservation and civic planning.
Rowayton Gardeners have contributed to the beautification of Rowayton and have received an "Award of Merit" from the 6th Taxing District. They have also received recognition from the National Federated Garden Club for the establishment of the Youth Garden at Rowayton Elementary School.
In June 2009, the Club hosted a Standard Flower Show, "Sailing through Rowayton" at the Community Center and Library. There were 24 floral designs and 275 horticultural exhibits.
Meetings
The Rowayton Gardeners meet on the first Thursday of each month at 9:00 a.m. at the Community Center. Meetings stimulate interest and build expertise in gardening through lectures and workshops on horticulture, flower arranging, environmental issues and garden design.
There are almost 100 members of the club today and every active member is required to assist with club activities.
New members are welcome! Please contact Membership Chairperson, Dossie Sullivan at 838-8109, for more information or email Rowaytongardener@aol.com.
History
Rowayton Gardeners was organized in 1957 by Mrs. John F. Falsey, Mrs. Lewis E. Gage and Mrs. Peter Leavitt. They envisioned a group who would share and experience the joys of gardening that quickly grew to include civic awareness and a commitment to beautify our community.

Volunteers Needed for Spring Cleanup
The Rowayton Gardeners proposed last fall to begin clean up at the Rowayton School Field/Pond area as part of their Civic Beautification program.
As a result, last week the Norwalk Parks and Recreation Department began extensive work in the area. Invasive plants, thorny thickets of underbrush, and poison ivy were removed, as well as some sassafras trees that were being pulled down into the pond.
Some shrubs could not be saved due to the years of strangling vine growth. After clean up, appropriate native plants will be planted in their place.
COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS will be needed to help proceed with the project. Volunteer days will be scheduled for additional clean up and planting in the spring.
