“Ochen Priatna!” (Nice to Meet You!)

For the fourth summer, Rowayton families will be hosting Belarussian school-aged orphans.  The seven children arrive the last week in June and leave the first week in August. They enjoy day camp (generously sponsored by the Darien YMCA), medical and dental appointments and family life. This year, they will also be enjoying an afternoon camp at the beach, donated by Salty Dog.

Aside from having fun, the children are given a rest from the radiation that still contaminates much of Belarus after the Cherynobl Nuclear accident 11 years ago. To learn more about the program, visit www.ABRO.org. To donate money (it costs $1850 per child to bring the orphans here), clothes (the children arrive with just one outfit), or if you’re interested in being a host family, please call this year’s coordinator Libia Streat at 984-4481 or local host-parent Paula Fortuna at 855-8171. Please make checks out to ABRO Rowayton. Thank you to the many Rowaytonites and Roton Middle School students who have already contributed in many ways to this wonderful program.

Historical Society Moves Forward With Plans for Pinkney Museum

The Rowayton Historical Society has made great strides with their plans to revitalize Pinkney House as a museum.  In just a year and a half, membership to the Society has tripled, a new RHS website has been launched, estimates are in to make repairs to the House, a new roof has been put onto Pinkney and the adjoining Wash House, and the Society has been featured in Darien, New Canaan and Rowayton Magazine three times as well as in the Norwalk Citizen News and the Norwalk Hour. We are excited that we now have the space to expand, store and exhibit our remarkable collection and are eager to get on with the renovation. The RHS will have an Open House after the Memorial Day Parade on May 25th, come see the newly expanded space!

We envision the Historical Society and Pinkney to be the gateway to Rowayton and a beautiful cultural and educational facility for everyone. The Board of the RHS is looking forward to the day when we will be able to serve our community by having first rate archives, buildings and exhibit space.  We hope you will share our vision and help us with our plan. The RHS welcomes all members of our community to join us in helping to preserve our past. From the early Colonial period through the Industrial Revolution and Post War periods, our town is a microcosm of American history. An exciting new opportunity exists for our organization to expand, but we can’t do it without your help. We need your expertise, your talent, your imagination and your support. Please contact us at info@rowaytonhistoricalsociety.org for more information. Thank you!
